PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound under mild condition in high yield by oxidizing a p-dialkylaminocinnamic alcohol with manganese dioxide using a pyridine compound or an alcohol as the reaction solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The objective p-dialkylaminocinnamaldehyde of formula II is produced by oxidizing a p-dialkylaminocinnamic alcohol of formula I (R and R' are each a lower alkyl) with manganese dioxide using a pyridine compound or an alcohol as the reaction solvent. The p-dialkylaminocinnamic alcohol of formula I is easily producible by using a p-dialkylaminobenzaldehyde as a starting substance. The amount of the reaction solvent is preferably 15-30 pts.vol. based on 1pt.vol. of the compound of formula I. The reaction solvent can be recovered and reused. The objective compound can be produced in high yield and quality by this process without increasing the load on waste water treatment. The compound of formula II is useful as a determination reagent for γ-GPT, vitamin H, etc.
