PURPOSE: To obtain a p-phenylenediamine at one stage in high yield by reacting a phenylenediamine derivative with a 4-hydroxydiphenylamine derivative in the presence of specific titanium compound or a zirconium compound.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (X1 to X3 are H, alkyl, acyl or arylsulfonyl; X4 is alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, dialkylamino, acylamine, etc.; 1 is 0-4)(e.g. p-phenylenediamine) is reacted with a compound of formula II (X5 is H or alkyl); X6 and X7 are alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, dialkylamino, etc.; (m) is 0-4; (n) is 0-5)(e.g. 4-hydroxydiphenylamine) in the presence of an alkoxy, aryloxy or halogen-containing titanium compound or zirconium compound (e.g. tetraisopropoxytitanium) to give a pphenylenediamine derivative of formula III [e.g. N-(4-aminophenyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine].
