PURPOSE: To reduce the amount of a cationic polymer that is needed for obtaining paper having the optimum performance by improving the freeness and the yield and by forming the drained pulp including a cationic polymer in the production of paper from an aqueous cellulose suspension.

CONSTITUTION: An aqueous cellulosic suspension is allowed to pass through one or more shearing steps, selected from cleaning, mixing and pumping. Before the shearing step, a cationic main polymer is added, and an inorganic substance, for example, bentonite is added after the shearing step to produce paper or paper board according to the Hydrochor process. In this case, a drainage aid of a water-soluble cationic polymer is added to cellulose pulp, then, the pulp is drained, and the drained pulp is diluted to give the above water-based cellulose suspension.
