PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain the titled compound, by carrying out halogenation of benzenes in two stages of the first reactor working in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst and the second reactor working in the presence of a zeolite catalyst and circulating an unreacted halogenating agent in an exhaust gas from the second reactor.
CONSTITUTION: When benzene is halogenated to afford para-dihalobenzene, benzene is halogenated (especially in halogenation degree preferably controlled to ≤1.0) with a halogenating agent such as chlorine and bromine is the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst (e.g. halogenated iron) in the first reactor to provide a reaction product mainly consisting of monohalobenzene, from which the Lewis acid catalyst is then removed and the reaction product free from the catalyst is further halogenated in the presence of a zeolite catalyst in the second reactor to provide a para-halobenzene and an unreacted halogenating agent in an exhaust gas discharged from the second reactor is returned to the first reactor and reutilized.
