PURPOSE: To obtain phenol and acetone by decomposing cumene hydroperoxide in the presence of a specific heterogenous catalyst such as heteropolyacid on an inert carrier and minimizing the formation of a byproduct under a mild condition.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of a heterogenous catalyst selected from heteropolyacids on an inert carrier, pref., supported heteropolyacid represented by formula I (wherein X is P or Si; M is Mo or W; and (n) is 4 or 5) (A), an ion exchange resin having a sulfonic acid functional group, pref., a resin wherein a sulfonic acid functional group is bonded to a skeletal chain of a styrene/ divinylbenzene polymer having 1-20% of crosslinking (B), montmorillonite silica- alumina clay represented by formula II (M is Na or Li) (C), montmorillonite clay modified by fluorine-containing acid or heteropolyacid on an inert carrier or Ti, Zr and Al (D), cumene hydroperoxide is decomposed at 20-150°C under pressure of 0.1-7 MPa.
