PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for medicine without contamination by impurities and coloring by blowing SO2 into a solvent mixture consisting of perchloromethylmercaptane contained as a main ingredient, sulfur chloride, organic solvent and water and then removing water layer.
CONSTITUTION: Sulfur dioxide is blown into a mixed solution consisting of sulfur chloride, iodide (e.g., sodium iodide or iodine), organic solvent and water and then water layer is removed from the reaction liquid and then cleaned with new water to remove sulfur dichloride and ethylphenol and after separation, phenols (e.g., phenol, methylphenol, ethylphenol, β-naphthol, etc.) and then dehydrohalogenation agent [e.g., NaOH, KOH, Mg(OH)2, Ca(OH)2, etc.] are added thereto to provide phenyl chlorothioformates.
