PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as a component for liquid crystal composition, its intermediate and intermediate for various pharmaceuticals and agrichemicals in high yield by reacting a specific compound with a boric acid derivative in the presence of a metal catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula R1-NAP-Z (R1 is H, cyano, F, CF3, OCF3, benzyloxy or 1-18C alkyl; NAP is 2,6-naphthylene; Z is halogen or OSO2CF3) is made to react with a compound of the formula (HO)2B-A-R2 (R2 is H, F, CF3, OCF3, benzyloxy or 1-18C alkyl; A is 1,4-phenylene) in the presence of a metallic catalyst [e.g. tetrakis-(triphenylphosphine)palladium] and a base (e.g. triethylamine) in a solvent (e.g. ethanol) at 0-180°C to obtain the objective compound of the formula R1-NAP-A-R2. The objective compound can be produced under mild conditions without generating polluting waste liquid.
