PURPOSE: To obtain a piston ring which is excellent in both elongation and wear resistance by welding a different metal to the outside circumference of a metallic pipe to manufacture a double-layered metallic tubular blank material and subjecting the material to a prescribed heat treatment then slicing the blank material.
CONSTITUTION: A hollow metallic base material 6 on which vitreous powder is coated 5 is inserted into a casting mold M constituted of a water cooled copper mold 1, a graphite splash mold 2 and a refractory mold 3 enveloping an electromagnetic induction stirrer 4. Molten metal 7 poured into the space between the mold M and the material 6 is coated with a flux 10 and a half-molten metal 11 and a solidified layer 12 are successively formed on the outside circumference of the material 6 to yield a circular cylindrical body having the double-layered structure. The two-layered circular cylindrical body is subjected to a prescribed heat treatment and rough working and thereafter said body is sliced to a prescribed thickness, by which a desired blank material for the piston ring is obtd. The piston ring which is excellent in both elongation and wear resistance and is free from fracture is thus obtd.
