Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prevent the fusion of fibers with each other without using a fusion- preventing agent, etc., by heat-treating an infusibilized spun fiber under specific condition before carbonization and opening the treated fibers.

CONSTITUTION: A spun fiber is heat-treated, after infusibilization and before carbonization, in an inert atmosphere under a condition to exhibit a weight loss corresponding to 25-60% of the weight loss of the fiber between 150°C and 1000°C when the fiber is heated from room temperature to 1000°C in an inert atmosphere at a heating rate of 5°C/min. The heat-treated fibers are opened to obtain the subject fibers having flexibility.
