PURPOSE: To obtain a leathery sheetlike material having pliable and soft touch, by coating a base fabric consisting of polyester fibers with a PVA solution, closely adhering the PVA to the fiber surfaces, impregnating the resultant fabric with a polyurethane elastomer solution and wet coagulating the solution.

CONSTITUTION: A base fabric consisting of polyester fibers is pretreated with PVA. In the process, the base fabric is dipped in a solution prepared by adding a water-soluble high-boiling liquid substance, e.g. glycol, in 10W30wt% concentration to an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in, e.g. 0.2W5wt% concentration, heat-treated and then impregnated with an aqueous solution of PVA in 5W20wt% concentration to closely adhere the PVA to the above- mentioned metal hydroxide. The fabric is then impregnated with a solution of a polyurethane elastomer in a water-miscible organic solvent and then wet coagulated in an aqueous medium.
