Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce the titled easily decomposable polymer having relatively low softening point and low residual catalyst content, by carrying out the anionic polymerization of α-methylstyrene in the presence of a catalyst such as organic Li compound, etc., and treating the polymerization product with activated clay.

CONSTITUTION: The objective polymer is produced by carrying out the anionic polymerization of α-methylstyrene using a catalyst comprizing an organic lithium compound and/or an organic sodium compound (e.g. n-butyl lithium, sodium naphthalene, etc.), and treating the obtained polymer with activated clay. Preferably, the activated clay is removed after the activated clay treatment, and the unreacted monomer and solvent are removed from the product by distillation.
