PURPOSE: To produce poly--caprolactones having various wt. average mol.wts., including one having a very high mol.wt., in a very high efficiency by continuously polymerizing -caprolactone in the molten state in an extruder while using a specific polymn. initiator.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polymer is obtd. by continuously polymerizing -caprolactone in the molten state in an extruder while using an aluminum alkoxide (pref. aluminum triisopropoxide) as a polymn. initiator. Pref., the polymn. is conducted at 130-180°C for an average dwell time of 15 min or less with an extruder having two screws rotating together. Pref., the resultant polymer is a homopolymer of -caprolactone having a wt. average mol.wt. of 115,000-200,000 and a ratio of Mw/Mn of 2.2 or higher.
