Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyalcohol having a high grade gas barrier property and high in an OH content in high selectivity in a state little in the by- production of tetrahydrofuran rings by hydrogenating a polyketone obtained from a specific polyolefin and carbon monoxide in a specified solvent.
SOLUTION: This method for producing a polyalcohol comprises hydrogenating (A) a polyketone (e.g. an alternating copolymer having an A2 copolymerization degree of 49-50 equivalent %) in the presence of (C) a hydrogenation catalyst in (B) sulfolane or a solvent consisting mainly of the sulfolane (e.g. the mixture of the sulfolane with water). The polyketone (A) is obtained by copolymerizing (A1) an olefin consisting mainly of ethylene, such as ethylene alone or the mixture of the ethylene with propylene, with (A2) carbon monoxide e.g. in the presence of a catalyst containing a transition metal compound as a component.
