Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyalcohol having a high hydroxyl content economically by using a catalyst prepared from a ruthenium compound and a specified phosphine compound in producing a polyalcohol by reducing a polyketone being a carbon monoxide/olefin compound copolymer with hydrogen.
SOLUTION: This polyalcohol is produced by reducing a polyketone being a carbon monoxide/olefin compound copolymer with hydrogen in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst prepared from a ruthenium compound and a phosphine compound represented by the formula: R1R2R3P (wherein R1, R2 and R3 are each a 1-12C alkyl which may have a substituent). In the formula, R1, R2 and R3 are desirably 2-8C n-alkyls. The catalyst is more desirably one prepared in the presence of an acid or its salt. The pKa of the acid or its salt is more desirably 5 or below. The polyketoner is more desirably an ethylene/ carbon monoxide copolymer having a carbonyl content of 40-50 equivalent %.
