Title:
PRODUCTION OF POLYALKYLATED XANTHENE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3962835
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in high yield by reacting acetone with an alkylated phenol in the presence of a strong acid catalyst under a specific condition.
SOLUTION: (A) An oxidized organic substance selected from a ketone (preferably acetone), spirochroman and chroman is reacted with (B) an alkylated phenol (preferably m-cresol, p-cresol or 3,4-dimethylphenol) in the molar ratio of about (2-100):1 in the presence of an effective amount of a strong acid catalyst (preferably methanesulfonic acid) at about 100°C to 200$0C under about 1 atmospheric pressure to 75 atmospheric pressure to give a polyalkylated xanthene. The effective amount of the catalyst is preferably about 0.1wt.% to 50wt.% based on the total weight of the reaction mixture of the component A and the component B. For example, 3,6,9,9-tetramethylxanthene is obtained from m-cresol, acetone and methanesulfonic acid.
