PURPOSE: To obtain inexpensively the titled compound having a viscosity high enough for melt molding, by reacting a polyhalogenated aromatic compound with an alkali sulfide in an organic amide solvent in the presence of an alkali metal oxalate.
CONSTITUTION: A polyhalogenated aromatic compound (e.g., p-dichlorobenzene or dichlorodiphenyl sulfone) is reacted with an alkali sulfide (e.g., sodium sulfide) in an organic amide solvent (e.g., N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or dimethylformamide) in the presence of an alkali metal oxalate (e.g., sodium oxalate or potassium oxalate). In this way, a polyarylene sulfide having a high degree of polymerization and a high melt viscosity and need not be subjected to treatment such as thickening or heat crosslinking can be obtained. The obtained polyarylene sulfide can be suitably used as a material for films, fibers, etc.
