Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain an optical material having a stabilized MW and excellent heat and hydrolysis resistance, by transesterifying a dihydroxy compound with a diallyl carbonate in the presence of a specified catalyst and a monofunctional organic compound as a terminal modifier.

CONSTITUTION: The production of a polycarbonate by transesterifying a dihydroxy compound with a diallyl carbonate is carried out in the following way. At least one catalyst selected from among an alkali metal borohydride, a tetraalkylammonium borohydride and a tetraalkylammonium halide is used as a catalyst and a monofunctional organic compound of the formula is used as a chain terminator/modifier. The amount of the chain terminator added is such that it is effective in preparing an aromatic polycarbonate having a viscosity-average MW of, preferably, about 10,000W25,000.
