Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a polycarbonate without discoloration which scarcely suffers the discoloration of the resin and the occurrence of foreign materials during molding and processing by effecting melt polymerization in the presence of a specified catalyst system.
SOLUTION: In this process for producing a polycarbonate by the melt polycondensation of an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a diaryl carbonate, the reaction is effected in the presence of catalysts comprising a basic nitrogenous compound (A), an alkali (alkaline earth) metal compound (B) and a hindered phenol compound (C). The basic nitrogenous compound preferably comprises an ammonium hydroxide compound, especially tetramethylammonium hydroxide. It is desirable that the amounts of the catalysts comprising the components A, B and C respectively are 10-6 to 10-1 mol, 10-8 to 10-4mol and 10-6 to 10-2mol per mol of the aromatic dihydroxy compound.
