PURPOSE: To obtain a polycarbonate which is substantially colorless and excellent in hydrolysis resistance without using any heat stabilizer, by using phosgene prepared from carbon monoxide which a total sulfur concentration has decreased to a specified value in the production of a polycarbonate by reacting a dihydric phenol with phosgene.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of a polycarbonate by reacting a dihydric phenol with phosgene in the presence of a solvent, phosgene obtained by reacting carbon monoxide having a total sulfur concentration ≤30ppm. wol. with chlorine is used. Said carbon monoxide can be obtained by, for example, bringing carbon monoxide discharged from a producer into contact with a conversion catalyst to convert the contained sulfur compounds into hydrogen sulfide and further with an aqueous solution of a base such as calcium hydroxide, sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide to remove hydrogen sulfide from it.
