Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain a polycyclic aromatic compound useful as antibacterial or antifungal agent in a single step by reaction of an eliminable group- bearing aromatic compound with a metallocyclopentadiene easily synthesizable from an acetylene compound and a specific metal compound.
SOLUTION: This polycyclic aromatic compound of formula III is obtained by reaction of an aromatic compound of e.g. formula I (Y1 and Y2 are each C(R1) or N; R1 to R3 are each H, a 1-10C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl, phenyl, etc.,; X1 and X2 are each a halogen) with a compound of formula II (R7 to R10 are each H, a 1-10C alkyl, silyl, etc.,; M1 is a transition metal; Z is a neutral or anionic ligand; (m) is 0-6) and a metal compound of the formula M2Ln (M2 is a group VII to X III element; L is an anionic residue; (n) is the number corresponding to the oxidation number of M2) in a solvent (e.g. THF) at room temperature to the boiling point of the solvent. This polycyclic aromatic compound (e.g. 1,2,3,4-tetraethylnaphthalene) has excellent controlling effect on a wide range of fungi and bacterial species.
