PURPOSE: To suppress the formation of by-products and to produce a low-unsaturation polyether compound, by adding a plurality of alkylene oxides to an active hydrogen-containing compound in the presence of a specified catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: As the catalyst there is employed an alkali metal-coordinated cryptate or a combination of an alkali metal compound such as KOH or NaOH and at least 1mol%, pref., 5W100mol% of a crown ether such as 18-crown-6 and/or cryptand such as 4,7,13,14,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo[8,8,8]hexacosure. Then, a polyester compound comprising a polyether-polyol having a hydroxyl value of 15W200 is obtained by adding (A) an active hydrogen-containing compound such as glycerin, ethylenediamine or aniline to (B) an alkylene oxide such as propylene oxide or epichlorohydrin in the presence of said catalyst so that at least two molecules of component (B) are added to one molecule of cmponent (A).
