Abstract:
PURPOSE: To produce a polyethylene naphthalate which is excellent in electrostatic application during film formation, has a low content of foreign matter and good transparency and is suited for a photographic film support.
CONSTITUTION: The production process comprises reacting 2,6- naphthalenedicarboxylic acid with ethylene glycol as the principal components in the presence of at least one compound selected from among a magnesium compound, a manganese compound and a zinc compound each of which is soluble in the glycol, a nitrogenous basic compound and a phosphorus compound and a polymerization catalyst comprising a glycol-soluble germanium compound. The compounds other than the principal components are added in amounts satisfying the relationships: 0.005<M<1.0; 0.00015<M/P<0.024; 0.01<A/(M+G)<0.70; and 0.21<G<2.18 (wherein M is the amount (g. atom) of the magnesium, manganese or zinc atoms added per ton of the polymer, P is the amount (ppm) of the phosphorus atoms added per ton of the polymer, A is the number of moles of the nitrogenous basic compound added per ton of the polymer; and G (g. atom) is the amount of the germanium atoms added per ton of the polymer).
