Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a monodisperse poly(hydroxystyrene) having a desired molecular weight by anionically polymerizing a specific monomer and then eliminating dimethylphenylcarbinyldimethylsilyl groups from the resulting polymer. CONSTITUTION:A monomer of formula I is anionically polymerized in the presence of a living anionic polymerization initiator in an organic solvent at -78 deg.C to the boiling point of the solvent for 10min to 7hr thereby to obtain a living polymer which is poly(p-vinylphenoxydimethylphenylcarbinyldimethylsilane) made up of the unit of formula II. An acid is added dropwise to this polymer in a mixed solvent composed of dioxane, acetone, acetonitrile, benzene, etc., thereby to cleave each pendant group at the ether bond to which the dimethylphenylcarbinyldimethylsilyl group is linked. Thus, a poly(hydroxystyrene) is obtained which has the phenol moiety-containing structural unit of formula III.
