SOLUTION: Hydrophobicity and/or resistance to moisture permeation is imparted to a substrate selected from the group consisting of org. materials and metals (pref. selected from the group consisting of metals, glass, paper, carton board, wood, wood composites, plastic sheet and film, fabrics, and nowoven fabrics) or those properties of the substrate are improved by coating the substrate with a polymer which contains a hydrocarbon wax having an m.p. of 25-125°C and is produced by the emulsion or suspension polymn. of at least one ethylenically unsatd. monomer in the presence of the wax.
