PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer emulsion having a freely controllable particle diameter, by polymerizing a radical-polymerizable unsaturated bond-containing monomer in an aqueous medium in the presence of a specified water-soluble copolymer.
CONSTITUTION: A radical-polymerizable unsaturated bond-containing monomer is stably polymerized in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water-soluble copolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated nitroben-containing compound or its monoalkyl substituted product with an unsaturated carboxylic acid or a compound of its salt. Examples of the ethylenically unsaturated nitrogen-containing compounds include (meth)acrylamide, N-methylolacryl(meth)acrylamide. Examples of the unsaturated carboxylic acids include (meth)acrylic acid and vinylacetic acid. As the ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid, there can be used vinylsulfonic acid, allylsulfonic acid, etc.
