PURPOSE: To produce a polyolefin having a narrow molecular weight distribution and excellent in quality by (co)polymerizing a specified α-olefin in the presence of a specified polymerization catalyst exhibiting a high activity and a high durability of the activity and capable of synthesizing a high-molecular polymer even at a high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: The polyolefin can be produced by (co)polymerizing a 2 to 10C α-olefin such as ethylene in the presence of a polymerization catalyst composed of a reaction product between an organic rare earth metal compound of formula I [Cp is a (substituted) cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, fluorenyl, etc.; L is a metal corresponding to atomic number 39 and 57 to 71 in the periodic table; X is a halogen; M is an alkali (alkaline earth) metal; D is an electron donor; (a) and (b) are each 1 to 2; (c) is 0 to 1; (d) is 0 to 3], e.g. biscyclopentadienylsamarium chloride and a Grignard reagent of formula II (R is a hydrocarbon).
