PURPOSE: To obtain the subject monomer capable of providing a polymer useful as a new substrate for cell culture, a biodegradable plastic, etc., due to vinyl group at the reducing terminal of a polysaccharide by (co)polymerization, etc., according to a specific method using an oligosaccharide as a raw material.
CONSTITUTION: The aldehyde in a reducing terminal site of an oligosaccharide (e.g. maltopentaose) having 3-10 polymerization degree is initially oxidized with e.g. iodine to form a lactone, which is then made to react with a compound, expressed by formula I (R is a compound in which C, H, N, etc., are bound through covalent bond) and having vinyl group and amino group together (preferably vinylbenzylamine, etc.) to form the amide bond between the lactone site of the oligosaccharide and the amino group site of the compound expressed by formula I. An enzyme (e.g. a phosphorylase) is finally made to act on the bound polysaccharide site having 3-10 polymerization degree until a polysaccharide having 15-500 number-average polymerization degree is prepared. Thereby, the objective monomer expressed by formula II [(n) is ≥13] is obtained.
