PURPOSE: To obtain a monomeric polyvinyl compd. and/or its oligomer useful as an intermediate of a crosslinker or a comonomer for a resin compsn. or a coating compsn. by the metathesis of norbornene at a high rate of conversion with high selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: Norbornene and/or substd. norbornene, especially a compd. of formula I (where each of R and R' is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an aryl, etc., R may be H, an alkenyl, a cycloalkenyl, etc., and at least one R is not H) is allowed to react with ethylene in the presence of a rhenium oxide (preferably Re2O7) catalyst activated by a hydrocarbyl metal, preferably R4Sn, R3Al, R2AlCl, RAlCl2 or R2Zn (R is an alkyl, an aryl, an alkaryl or an aralkyl) and carried on a carrier, preferably a metal oxide, especially alumina, silica or magnesia to advantageously obtain the objective polyvinyl compd. and/or its oligomer, especially a compd. of formula II.
