Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a porous carbon material product useful for an industrial material, etc., by adding a thermosetting resin and water to a bran such as rice bran or bran, kneading, granulating, molding by molds, heating, baking and cooling the molded product under specific conditions.
SOLUTION: A bran such as rice bran or bran having <20 meshes is mixed with a thermosetting resin and an aqueous solution containing a proper amount of a binder or water. The mixture is heated to about 60-80°C, granulated while removing a volatile substance and the granulated material is screened by a sieve to give a granulated material having a fixed particle size or smaller than it. The granulated material is packed into a mold and molded while repeatedly pressurizing and degassing. The molded product removed from the mold is baked and carbonized in an inert gas atmosphere or in vacuum. Then the carbonized material is cooled from the final baking temperature to a normal temperature at a fixed cooling rate to give a porous carbon material product. A phenolic resin e.g. one diluted to about 10-60wt.% is used as the thermosetting resin.
