Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a porous glass article having easily controllable pore diame ter and pore volume, by forming a matrix from a non-woven fabric composed of a metal alkoxide polymer and a heat-infusible fiber, completely opening the heat-infusible fiber and treating the surface of the fiber with a silane- coupling agent. CONSTITUTION:A metal alkoxide, e.g., ethyl silicate is mixed with ethanol, heated at 60-80 deg.C and hydrolyzed by dripping an aqueous solution of hydrochlo ric acid to the mixture under agitation. A heat-infusible fiber (e.g., non-woven cotton fabric treated with silane-coupling agent) is immersed in the hydrolyzed product. The hydrolyzed product is gelatinized in a constant temperature and humidity chamber by dehydrative condensation reaction and solidified by converting into non-fluid state. The solidified product is heated at 110-120 deg.C in vacuum to dissipate the liquid component and the formed matrix is slowly heated at 600-800 deg.C to carbonize the fiber in the matrix. The carbon and hydrocarbon component in the matrix is completely oxidized in an oxidizing atmosphere and fine pores are formed in the matrix to obtain the objective porous glass article.
