Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a porous heat-resistant material of silicon carbide, having a remarkably high porosity and capable of forming a light-weight exhaust gas filter low in pressure loss and excellent in mechanical strength, impact resistance and filter efficiency when used as a parent material of a filter, etc.

CONSTITUTION: This production method involves a process for dispersing and mixing a powdery silicon carbide, an organic fiber and a sintering assistant in water, another process for coagulating the dispersed and mixed system by adding a coagulant thereto, another process for making a sheet according to the paper-making method after coagulation and the other process for heat treating the resultant sheet or a processed material of this sheet.
