PURPOSE: To obtain efficiently the titled pre-expanded particles with a high expansion ratio, by retaining pre-expanded particles having expandability imparted thereto under pressure within a pressurizing tank, pressure-feeding the particles to metering tanks to pressurize them and pressure-feeding them to a foaming machine to expand them.
CONSTITUTION: The pre-expanded particles of a thermoplastic resin (e.g. polypropylene) having expandability impated thereto be treating it under pressure so as to give particles having an internal pressure of 0.5W10kg/cm2 (G) are fed to a pressurizing tank 1 and retained under a pressure of 1W10kg/m2. The particles are fed to metering tanks 4, 5 having a predetermined internal volume, where the particles are pressurized to 0.5W10kg/cm2 (G). the pre- expanded particles under pressure is pressure-fed to a foaming machine and heated to expand them at a high expansion ratio of 1.5W7 times the initial expansion ratio, thus obtaining the desired pre-expanded thermoplastic resin particles.
