PURPOSE: To produce a primary alcohol, in high selectivity, suppressing the production of by-products, by the catalytic hydrocracking of 2-alkyloxysilane using a specific amorphous alloy as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A primary alcohol is produced by reacting a 2-alkyloxysilane, especially 2-n-alkyloxysilane in a reactor filled with H2, optionally in a solvent under stirring under a hydrogen pressure of 5W300atm at 50W300°C for 0.5W20hr in the presence of a catalyst composed of one or more amorphous VIII-group metal boride, silicide or borosilicide of formulas I , II, III, IV, V, etc. (x, y and z are integer; -5≤x≤5; x=y+z). The catalyst can be prepared by pouring molten hot composition of the catalyst to the surface of a rotating metallic drum having high thermal conductivity and forming a thin film at a high speed.
