PURPOSE: To efficiently and industrially remarkably significantly obtain a procyanidin useful as a producing raw material for antioxidant for e.g. food or cosmetic, medicine, etc., at a low cost in simple treatment, by extracting a bark in a polar solvent at specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A bark of coniferous tree such as inner bark of Japanese cedar, hinoli cypress, cherry or spruce is directly dried and then broken into fine piece or fine grain having a proper size using cutting machine, cutting mill, etc., and extracted in a polar solvent such as water at 70W100°C, especially 80W90°C for 0.2W8hr, preferably 1W2hr to give a liquid containing 20W50% of procyanidin expressed by the formula which is dimer W oligomer consisting of 2W30 units of flavan-3-ol or flavan-3,4-diol which is a constitutional unit. The resultant procyanidin-containing liquid, through it can be directly sufficiently used, as necessary is purified by purification such as absorbing method or membrane concentration method to provide the high-quality procyanidin expressed by the formula.
