PURPOSE: To profitably obtain a pyridine-carboxylic acid deriv. useful as a synthesis intermediate of a herbicide by allowing an unsatd. carboxylic acid deriv. to react with a hydroxylamine and an α,β-unsatd. carbonyl compd.
CONSTITUTION: An unsatd. diacid deriv. represented by formula I or II [where each of R1 and R2 is a group represented by formula III (where Z is OR6 or NR5R6 and each of R5 and R6 is H, an alkyl, an aryl, etc.), CN, etc.; and each of R3 and R4 is H, an alkyl, an aryl, CN, etc.], e.g. diethyl maleate is allowed to react with a hydroxylamine represented by the formula R-NH-OH (where R is H, an alkyl or an aryl) at pH 5-12 in a solvent such as arom. hydrocarbon to form an N-hydroxy-2-aminobutane diacid deriv. represented by formula IV. This compd. is then allowed to react with an α,β-unsatd. carbonyl compd. represented by formula V [where each of R8 and R10 is H, an alkyl, an alkenyl, etc.; R9 has the same meaning as R8 and R10, and R9 and R10 may bond to each other to form -(CH2)3-10-] at pH 2-7 in a solvent such as 1-butanol in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst such as Pd to obtain the objective pyridine-carboxylic acid deriv. represented by formula VI.
