PURPOSE: The reaction of a tertiary amine, an acid and an epoxide is conducted in a solvent containing a small amount of water to enable high-yield product of a compound which is used as an emulsifier, antistatic agent, a flexibilizer or antiseptic, under mild conditions in a shortened time.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of a tertiary amine of formula I (R1WR3 are 1W24C alkyl or alkenyl), an acid and an epoxide is effected in a solvent, preferably of a lower alcohol of 1W6 carbon atoms such as methanol or isopropanol at 40W80°C for 2W3hr to give the objective compound of formula II (R4 is alkyl or alkoxymethyl of 1W24 carbon atoms; A- is anion) where the amounts of the tertiary amine is excessive moles based on the acid and the epoxide, preferably 1.1W1.3 times molar amount and the total amount of water in the solvent and in the acid is 5W20 times moles, preferably 5W10 times moles per mole of the tertiary amine.
