Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymer useful as flocculant for use in municipal sewage treatment, by reaction of an amino alkylated polymer with an alkylating agent at specific pH value to effect high degree of quaternization.

CONSTITUTION: Normally 3W20wt% aqueous solution of an acrylamide polymer is made to react with, (A) pref. 0.1W1 molar time, based on the amide group in said polymer,of HCHO and (B) pref. 0.1W1.1 molar times, based on the above amide group, of a dialkylamine (e.g., dimetylamine) to prepare an amino alkylated polymer. The resulting polymer is made to react with (C) normally 0.5W1.5 molar times, based on the aminoalkyl group in the above polymer, of an alkylating agent (e.g., an ethyl chloride, diethyl sulfate) at a pH 3W7, pref. at 20W45°C for 15W120min, thus obtaining the objective quaternized cationic polymer.
