Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain in high yield the subject high-purity glass form of good optical characteristics by a mechanical molding means while suppressing developments of cracks, residual air bubbles, etc.
CONSTITUTION: The objective silica-based porous glass form 36 can be obtained by mechanically molding a molding material 35 containing, as the chief stock, silica-based fine glass particles with 0.6-20μm mean diameter. With such appropriate particle size, the above glass form 36 is produced with high productivity and high quality leading to optical fiber matrix of excellent characteristics such as high purity and high mechanical strength, furthermore leading to improvement in the yield of the good-quality products in the subsequent processes.
