PURPOSE: To obtain a rust preventive wire without requiring copper plating in the production of a solid wire for gas shielded welding by subjecting a drawn alloy wire to a bluing treatment to remove the drawing lubricant then coating a lubricant thereon.

CONSTITUTION: In the stage of production of a solid wire for gas shielded welding, an alloy for wires is drawn to a wire for welding; thereafter the wire is heated for 10min at 150W500°C, more particularly 200W400°C in an oxidative atmosphere, whereby the surface of the wire is subjected to a bluing treatment. This wire is passed through the inside of water to rinse away lime as a drawing lubricant and a neutralizer. After the rinsed wire is dired, an ordinary lubricant is coated thereon. Or order of the removal for the drawing lubricant and the bluing treatment may be alternated. The solid wire having excellent rust preventive property and surface conductivity is obtained without requiring copper plating.
