Title:
PRODUCTION OF SPONGE METAL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH03173728
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a sponge metal by bringing fine metallic powder into contact with molten Mg to wet the surface of the fine metallic powder with the Mg, then cooling the fine metallic powder to solidify the Mg and further heating the fine metallic powder to evaporate and remove the Mg, thereby the fine metallic powder is sintered and is fused to each other.

CONSTITUTION: The fine metallic powder consisting of Zr, Hf, Ti, U, etc., is brought into contact with the molten Mg at a temp. higher than the m.p. of the Mg. A mixture composed of about 65wt.% Mg and about 35% MgCl2 by be used in place of the Mg. As a result, the surface of the fine metallic powder is wetted by the Mg, its mixture, etc. The temp. is then kept at the m.p. of the Mg, etc., or below to solidify the molten Mg, etc. The fine metallic powder is then reheated to the evaporation point of the Mg, etc., or above. As a result, the fine metallic powder is sintered and is fused to each other and the Mg, etc., are removed by evaporation. The sponge metal cost effectively usable in production stages is thus obtd.
