Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject resin extremely high in stability in its melt molding operation and highly resistant to thermo-oxidative deterioration by heating a polyphenylene ether-based polymer having a specific terminal group together with a compound having a specific C=C double bond.
SOLUTION: This resin is obtained by heating a polyphenylene ether-based polymer having a terminal group of formula I (R1 is methyl or the like; R2 and R3 are each H or methyl: R6 and R7 are each H, an alkyl, or the like) together with a compound having C=C double bond and represented by formula II (R4 is H or methyl; R5 is propyl or the like) or formula III in the absence of any radical generator to a temperature not lower than the glass transition temperature of the polyphenylene ether. The resin thus obtained has the following characteristics: having 6-chroman-cyclized terminal groups at ≥0.01 on average based on 100 phenylene ether units constituting the resin, having a number-average molecular weight of 1,000-100,000, and having the fundamental skeleton which consists of the homopolymer of (A) 2,6-dimethylphenol or (B) 2-methyl-6-phenylphenol, or copolymer of the monomer A or B and/or (C) 2,3,6- trimethylphenol.
