Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a styrenic polymer having a high strength and a high mol.wt. at a high productivity by using a polymerizer comprising a spcific combination of a complete mixing type reactor and a nonstirring type reactor in the continuous process for polymerizing a styrenic monomer in bulk or soln. CONSTITUTION:In the continuous process for producing a styrenic polymer by polymerizing a styrenic monomer in bulk or soln., a polymerizer comprising a former-stage polymerizer consisting of one complete mixing type reactor 1 or two or more complete mixing type reactors 1 installed in parallel and a latter-stage polymerizer consisting of nonstirring type reactors 2 having a heat transfer area per unit vol. of 20m<2>/m<3> or higher is used. A feed-stock soln. 6 mainly comprising the styrenic monomer is introduced into the former- stage polymerizer where the material is polymerized until the polymer concn. in the soln. exceeds 40wt.%, and then introduced into the latter-stage polymerizer where the polymn. is continued at 180 deg.C or lower so that the polymer concn. at the exit of the final reactor exceeds 75wt.%.
