PURPOSE: To produce a highly syndiotactic styrenic polymer efficiently at a low cost by premixing a styrenic monomer with an aluminum hydride compd. and then polymerizing the monomer using a specific transition metal compd. catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A styrenic monomer is mixed with an aluminum hydride compd. (e.g. dimethylaluminum hydride) and then polymerized using a catalyst comprising a transition metal compd. (e.g. cyclopentadienyltrimethyltitanium) and a compd. capable of reacting with the transition metal compd. to form an ionic complex or an oxygen-contg. compd. of formula l and/or formula II (wherein R1 to R7 are each 1-8C alkyl; Y1 to Y5 are each an element of the group 13; and a, b, c, and d are each 0-50 provided a+b and c+d are each 1 or higher) (e.g. methylaluminoxane). Thus, the degradation in catalyst activity is prevented and the content of residual metals in the resulting polymer is reduced.
