To industrially easily and economically obtain the subject compound useful as e.g. a precursor of biphenyl derivatives by reacting a specific chlorobenzene compound with magnesium in the presence of e.g. an anthracene compound followed by reacting the product with a specific boric acid ester followed by hydrolysis and the like.
This compound of formula IV (Z is D or the like) is obtained by reacting a compound of formula I (R1 to R4 are each H or the like) with magnesium in the presence of an anthracene compound selected from a (substituted) anthracene and (substituted) Mg anthracene, and a transition metal halide if necessary, and a magnesium halide if necessary to obtain a compound of formula II (D is a protected aldehyde), which is then reacted with a compound of the formula B(OR')3 (R' is a 1-8C alkyl or the like) followed by hydrolyzing thus obtained product to form a compound of formula III (D1 is D or the like; and Q1 and Q2 are each OH or the like) followed by carrying out other reaction(s) if necessary.
