Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for readily producing the subject high-purity compound in high degree of conversion without requiring a complicated process by subjecting sulfoisophthatic acid to esterification reaction with an alcohol compound by azeotropic dehydration and neutralizing the reaction product with anilines.
SOLUTION: (A) 5-Sulfoisophthalic acid of formula I is subjected to esterification reaction with (B) an alcohol compound of formula II [R is a group of the formula R1OCH2CH2COCH2CH2 (R1 is H, a 1-15C alkyl, alkenyl or the like)] by azeotropic dehydration, preferably at 70-100°C in the presence of a water-nonmiscible organic solvent to afford (C) 5-sulfoisophthatic acid diester of formula III which is then neutralized with anilines of formula IV [R2 is a 1-4C alkyl or alkoxyl; (n) is an integer of 0-2] to provide (E) the objective 5-sulfoanilinium isophthalic acid diester of formula V. Furthermore, the component B is charged in an amount of 1.9-3.0 mol based on 1 mol component A. The product E readily forms doped polyaniline by only oxidative polymerization.
