Abstract:
PURPOSE: To easily obtain tert. aralkyl isocyanates by a simple method using noncorrosive low-cost starting materials by heating specified urethanes so that alkanols are liberated and isocyanates are produced.
CONSTITUTION: Urethanes of formulae I and II (where R is an alkyl derived from lower alkanol; R1 is a 1-3 C alkyl; and R2 is phenyl, biphenyl, naphthalyl or a substd. arom. hydrocarbon) are heated at 200-300°C for a time sufficient to liberate alkanols of the formula ROH and to produce isocyanates corresponding to the urethanes and the objective tert. aralkyl isocyanates are obtd.
