PURPOSE: To accelerate such a reaction to produce alcohols by reacting an organohalide with a carbonyl compound in an organic solvent in the presence of metallic manganese, and then hydrolyzing the product, by making an ester present in the reaction medium.
CONSTITUTION: When an organohalide is reacted with a carbonyl compound in an organic solvent in the presence of metallic manganese, the product is hydrolyzed to produce secondary-tertiary alcohol useful not only for perfume but also for drugs, 3-13C ester derived from 2-12C carboxylic acid and 1-12C alcohol, preferably 2-4C aliphatic acid and 1-3C alcohol is made to exist in the reaction medium so that the starting time of the reaction from after approximately 2 hr to after 30-40 min as compared with a known method, and the reaction time is reduced from at least 12 hr to 1-6 hr, most preferably to 3.5-4.5 hr.
