PURPOSE: To obtain the subject high-purity compound(s) treating the product of hydrogenation of maleic acid, succinic acid or the like with a protic acid and distilling the reaction mixture.
CONSTITUTION: The product of hydrogenation of maleic acid, succinic acid, maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride and/or fumaric acid is treated with a protic acid at 100-300°C without pretreatment, and pure tetrahydrofuran and γ-butyrolactone are isolated from the resultant reaction mixture by distillation. The protic acid used is exemplified by an inorganic protic acid such as sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid, an organic protic acid such as oxalic acid or p- toluenesulfonic acid or a heteropoly acid and is added in an amount of 0.01-10 wt.%, especially 0.1-1 wt.% to the product of hydrogenation. By the treatment with the protic acid, the 1,4-butanediol contained in the product of hydrogenation can be converted quantitatively into tetrahydrofuran, and the other by-products are decomposed to form products not interfering with the distillation of tetrahydrofuran and γ-butyrolactone.
