PURPOSE: Adrenaline is electrolytically oxidized in water in the presence of a supporting electrolyte into adrenochrome and the product is made to react with simicarbazide to give adrenochrome semicarbazone used as a styptic or its intermediate with advantage.
CONSTITUTION: The electrolytic oxidation of the compound of formula II is carried out in water in the presence of a supporting electrolyte, preferably an alkali metal salt of organic acid, especially sodium formate, sodium acetate or potassium acetate, to give the compound of formula II. The reaction is preferably conducted by using a diaphragmed eletrolyzer, preferably separated into cathode and anode chambers with an ion-exchange membrane, particularly with an anion-exchange membrane, keeping the anode solution weakly acidic, especially at 3W6pH, and using a carbon or platinum electrode as an anode. Then, the compound of formula III is made to react with semicarbazide of formula IVto give the compound of formula I in high yield without formation of injurious wastes and by-products with industrial advantage.
