Abstract:
PURPOSE:To solve the problem of ozone layer depletion by using a blowing agent comprising trifluoromethane in producing a thermoplastic resin foam by mixing a thermoplastic resin with the blowing agent at high temp. and pressure and extruding the resulting mixture into a low-pressure zone. CONSTITUTION:A thermoplastic resin (e.g. a polystyrene resin) is mixed with trifluoromethane as a blowing agent on a single-screw extruder, etc., at high temp. and pressure and extruded into a low-pressure zone, giving the title foam. Trifluromethane, a hydroflurocarbon contg. no chlorine, does not deplete the ozone layer while providing blowing effects equivalent to that of the conventionally used chlorofluorocarbon such as dichlorodifluoromethane. If necessary, another blowing agent such as pentane or butane may be used in combination with trifluoromethane.
